Amboseli Safari from Nairobi: 2-Day Itinerary, Costs & Kilimanjaro Views (2026)
An Amboseli safari from Nairobi gives you the most famous view in Africa: herds of elephants walking across the plains with snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro behind them. The park is about four hours from Nairobi by road, which makes it one of the easiest safaris to plan.
This guide covers the best route and gate, a 2-day itinerary hour by hour, what it costs in 2026, and how to give yourself the best chance of a clear Kilimanjaro sunrise.
Why visit Amboseli National Park?
Amboseli is a compact 392 km² park on an ancient lake bed at the foot of Kilimanjaro. Its small size means you see a lot in a short time, which suits a 2-day trip.
It is best known for elephants: more than 1,600 live here, often moving in family herds of 20 to 50, and the bulls carry some of the largest tusks left in East Africa. Researchers have studied these families for over 50 years (Amboseli park guide).
- Elephants up close. Herds walk between the swamps every day, often right past your vehicle.
- The Kilimanjaro backdrop. Africa's highest mountain rises just across the Tanzanian border.
- Green swamps in a dry land. Enkongo Narok and Ol Okenya swamps, fed by Kilimanjaro's snowmelt, draw hippos, buffalo and flamingos.
- More than 400 bird species, a highlight from November to April when migrant birds arrive.
- Observation Hill, a viewpoint over the whole park, the swamps and the mountain.
Amboseli is not the place for big-cat sightings: lions are present but not common, and cheetahs and leopards are rare. If cats are your priority, pair it with a Maasai Mara safari.
Getting there: Nairobi to Amboseli by road
The quickest route is the Mombasa highway to Emali, then south on the C102 to Iremito Gate. It is tarmac almost all the way, with only the last 21 km on gravel, and the gate is the closest to the park centre (Amboseli routes and gates).
| Route | Distance | Time | Road |
|---|---|---|---|
| Via Emali to Iremito Gate | ~204 km | 4–5 h | Tarmac, then the last 21 km gravel. Our usual route. |
| Via Namanga to Meshanani Gate | ~220 km | 4–5 h | Tarmac to Namanga, then about 50 km of murram. Suits the western side. |
| Via Emali and Kimana to Kimana Gate | ~240 km | 4–5 h | Mostly tarmac. The link to Tsavo West. |
Good to know: the gates open from 06:00 to 18:00, and there is no fuel inside the park. Fill up in Emali, Kimana or Namanga. Park roads have a 40 km/h limit.
The 2-day Amboseli itinerary, hour by hour
This is the plan our driver-guides use for a 2-day, 1-night Amboseli safari from Nairobi. It gives you an afternoon drive, a sunset, and the all-important Kilimanjaro sunrise.
Nairobi to Amboseli
Morning drive, lunch, afternoon game drive and Observation Hill
- Pickup from your Nairobi hotel or the airport in your 4x4 Land Cruiser. Free airport pickup is included.
- Short stop in Emali for fuel, snacks and toilets.
- Enter at Iremito Gate. Your 24-hour park ticket starts here.
- Check in at your lodge or camp and have lunch.
- Afternoon game drive along the swamps, where elephants come to drink and bathe. Climb Observation Hill for views over the park.
- Sunset over the plains, then dinner. Set an alarm: the mountain is often clearest at dawn.
Tip: leave Nairobi early. Arriving by late morning gives you a full afternoon in the park, and your 24-hour ticket then covers tomorrow's sunrise drive.
Kilimanjaro sunrise and return
Dawn game drive, breakfast, back in Nairobi by late afternoon
- Sunrise game drive. This is your best chance to see Kilimanjaro clear of cloud, with elephants in front of it.
- Breakfast and check-out.
- Exit the park within 24 hours of entering to avoid paying another day's fee.
- A short visit to a Maasai community near the park on the way out.
- Arrive in Nairobi, drop-off at your hotel or the airport.
Have more time? Stay a second night for a full day in the park, or continue to Tsavo West instead of returning to Nairobi.
How much does an Amboseli safari cost in 2026?
For two adults on a 2-day, 1-night trip in a private Land Cruiser, the vehicle and park fees come to about USD 680, before accommodation and meals.
| Item (2 adults) | Calculation | 2 days / 1 night (USD) | 3 days / 2 nights (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4x4 Land Cruiser with driver-guide | USD 250 per day | 500 | 750 |
| Amboseli park fees | USD 90 per adult per 24 hours | 180 | 360 |
| Total before accommodation | 680 | 1,110 |
The Amboseli ticket covers 24 hours from entry, so a late-morning entry covers the next morning's drive (Amboseli fee guide). Children's rates are lower; East African citizens and residents pay in Kenyan shillings. Kenya's 2025 park tariff has faced a court challenge, so confirm the current rate on eCitizen before you travel.
Accommodation ranges from simple camps outside the gates to lodges in the park centre and luxury camps in private conservancies. Tell us your budget and we will build it into your quote. For groups of four or more, the vehicle cost is shared and the price per person drops sharply.
How to see Kilimanjaro clearly from Amboseli
Kilimanjaro is often hidden by cloud, and many visitors leave without seeing it. You can improve your chances a lot:
- Go out at sunrise. The mountain is clearest early in the morning, before the clouds build.
- Look again at sunset. Clouds often lift in the late afternoon.
- Visit after rain. Views are often clearest in the wet season, when rain clears the dust and haze (Amboseli best time).
- Stay at least one night. A day trip gives you only the hazy midday hours.
Best time to visit Amboseli
The best months for wildlife are June to October and January to February, when animals gather at the swamps and the tracks are dry. The best Kilimanjaro views often come in the wetter months.
| Months | Season | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| January – February | Short dry season | Good wildlife, green landscapes, peak prices |
| March – May | Long rains | Lush and quiet, clear mountain views after rain; April is the wettest month and roads can be poor |
| June – October | Long dry season | The best wildlife viewing at the swamps, but dusty, with hazier Kilimanjaro views |
| November – December | Short rains | Migrant birds arrive, good mountain views, the holiday rush in late December |
Combining Amboseli with other Kenya parks
Amboseli fits well into a longer safari. These are the routes our travellers book most:
Amboseli + Tsavo West
4–5 daysTsavo West is about 2 to 3 hours from Amboseli through the Kimana and Chyulu side. It adds lava landscapes, Mzima Springs and a much wilder feel. You can return to Nairobi or continue to the coast.
Amboseli + Maasai Mara
6–7 daysThe classic Kenya pairing: elephants and Kilimanjaro, then the big cats and the Great Migration. Route back through Nairobi, with an optional night at Lake Naivasha. See our 3-day Maasai Mara itinerary.
