3-Day Maasai Mara Safari from Nairobi: Itinerary, Costs & Tips (2026)

By Adventure Jeeps Car Hire 30 October 2026 10 min read

A 3-day Maasai Mara safari from Nairobi is the best short safari in Kenya. In two nights and three days you get a full day in the reserve, two sunrise game drives, and a real chance of seeing lions, cheetahs, elephants and, in season, the Great Migration.

This guide gives you an hour-by-hour itinerary, the road route and gates, a full 2026 budget, and the tips our driver-guides share with every traveller. Follow it as it is, or use it to plan a longer trip.

3 days2 nights, 4 game drives, 1 full day in the reserve
5–6 hrsby road from Nairobi to Sekenani Gate (about 231 km)
$100–200reserve entry per adult per day, by season
From $1,150for two: Land Cruiser and reserve fees, low season

Is 3 days enough for the Maasai Mara?

Yes. Three days is enough for a rewarding first visit to the Maasai Mara. The Mara has one of the highest densities of big cats in Africa, so most visitors see lions on their first drive.

What three days gives you, and what more time adds:

  • 3 days / 2 nights: an afternoon drive on arrival, one full day in the reserve, and a final sunrise drive. The classic first safari.
  • 4 days / 3 nights: a second full day, so you can reach the Mara River crossing points or the quieter western side without rushing.
  • 5 days or more: add Lake Nakuru or Lake Naivasha on the way, or spend nights in a private conservancy.

Getting there: Nairobi to the Maasai Mara by road or air

Via the Great Rift Valley and Narok

By road, the route leaves Nairobi on the A104, drops into the Great Rift Valley through Mai Mahiu on the B3, and reaches Narok, the last big town before the reserve. From Narok, the C12 leads to Sekenani Gate, the most-used eastern entrance (Mara Reserve route guide).

By air, scheduled flights leave from Wilson Airport, not JKIA, and take 45 to 60 minutes to the Mara airstrips. Luggage is usually limited to 15 kg in soft bags.

GateDistance from NairobiAllowBest for
Sekenani~231 km5–6 hMost eastern camps; the usual first-timer route
Talek~250 km5.5–6.5 hCamps along the Talek River
Oloolaimutia~240–250 km5.5–6.5 hBudget camps on the Siana side
Musiara~250–275 km6–7 hThe northern Mara and the Mara River
Oloololo~255–285 km6.5–7.5 hThe Mara Triangle on the western side

Road or flight? Driving costs far less for two or more people, gives you the Rift Valley views, and means your own vehicle and guide are with you for every game drive. Flying saves about four hours each way but you join the camp's shared game drives. Roads beyond Narok are rough in places, so a 4x4 is strongly recommended, especially after rain.

The 3-day Maasai Mara itinerary, hour by hour

This is the road itinerary our driver-guides run most often, with a camp near Sekenani Gate. Times are a guide; your driver adjusts them for traffic, weather and where the wildlife is.

Day1

Nairobi to the Maasai Mara

Rift Valley views, arrival, first afternoon game drive

  1. Pickup from your Nairobi hotel or the airport in your 4x4 Land Cruiser. Free airport pickup is included.
  2. Stop at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint for photos over the valley floor.
  3. Short break in Narok: last reliable fuel, ATMs, shops and toilets before the reserve.
  4. Arrive at camp, check in and have lunch.
  5. Afternoon game drive. The pop-up roof goes up as the light softens and the cats start moving.
  6. Dinner at camp and an early night: tomorrow starts before sunrise.

Tip: buy your reserve ticket for the right day. Mara tickets run 12 hours, from 06:00 to 18:00, so ask your guide when to enter to get the most from each day's fee.

Day2

Full day in the Maasai Mara

Sunrise to sunset game drive with a picnic lunch

  1. Optional hot air balloon flight at dawn, followed by a champagne bush breakfast (see the extras below).
  2. Leave camp with packed breakfast. Early morning is the best time for lions on a kill and cheetahs hunting.
  3. Picnic lunch under an acacia tree, or by the Mara River with hippos and crocodiles below.
  4. Continue across the plains. July to October, your guide heads for the river crossing points.
  5. Back at camp before the gates close. Dinner and stories around the fire.

Tip: a full day is where a private vehicle pays off. You stay with a sighting as long as you like, with no group schedule to follow.

Day3

Sunrise drive and return to Nairobi

One last game drive, then back to the city

  1. Final sunrise game drive, often the most rewarding drive of the trip.
  2. Breakfast and check-out.
  3. Exit the reserve. Staying past mid-morning on departure day triggers another full day's fee.
  4. A short Maasai village visit near the gate on the way out.
  5. Arrive in Nairobi, drop-off at your hotel or the airport.

Flying out the same day? Book an evening international flight, from about 20:00, to allow for Nairobi traffic.

How much does a 3-day Maasai Mara safari cost in 2026?

For two adults travelling by road in a private Land Cruiser, the vehicle and reserve fees come to about USD 1,150 in the low season and USD 1,550 in the high season, before accommodation and meals.

Item (2 adults)CalculationLow season (USD)High season (USD)
4x4 Land Cruiser with driver-guide3 days × 250750750
Maasai Mara reserve fees2 adults × 2 park days400800
Total before accommodation1,1501,550

Low season is 1 January to 30 June (USD 100 per adult per day); high season is 1 July to 31 December (USD 200). Children aged 9 to 17 pay USD 50 and children 8 and under enter free (Mara Reserve fees). The budget counts two park days because the day-3 sunrise drive ends before the mid-morning cut-off. A full third day inside the reserve adds another day's fee.

Accommodation is the other big cost and ranges from simple tented camps near the gates to luxury lodges and conservancy camps. Tell us your budget and we will match the camp to it in your quote. Travelling as a group of four or more? The vehicle cost is shared, so the price per person drops sharply. A 7-seat safari van at USD 180 a day lowers it further in the dry season.

Maasai Mara National Reserve or a private conservancy?

Reserve or conservancy: both are Mara

The national reserve is run by Narok County and is where the famous river crossings happen. The conservancies around it, such as Mara North, Naboisho and Olare Motorogi, are run with Maasai landowners, limit the number of vehicles, and are generally only open to guests staying at their camps.

Conservancy fees are charged on top of camp rates, roughly USD 100 to 120 per night for the best-known ones (Kenya conservancy fees). Mara North also allows night drives.

For a 3-day trip, most first-time travellers choose the reserve. A good plan for a longer trip is two nights in the reserve and one or two in a conservancy.

Best time for a 3-day Maasai Mara safari

The Mara is good all year, but the season changes the trip:

  • July to October: the Great Migration is in the Mara, with river crossings most common in August. Busiest and most expensive; book vehicles and camps early.
  • January to March: dry, quieter, and reserve fees are half price. Excellent value.
  • April to May: the long rains. Muddy tracks, the fewest visitors and the lowest camp prices; a 4x4 is essential.
  • November to December: short afternoon rains, green plains and newborn animals.

See the full month-by-month table in our Kenya safari car hire guide.

Optional extras worth adding

Hot air balloon safari

About USD 450–500 pp

One hour floating over the plains at sunrise, then a champagne bush breakfast. The morning takes 3.5 to 4 hours in total. July and August flights can sell out 3 to 4 months ahead (balloon safari guide).

Maasai village visit

About USD 25–50 pp

About an hour in a traditional manyatta: see inside the homes, learn about Maasai daily life and watch the warriors' jumping dance. You are not obliged to buy the crafts on offer (village visit guide). Ask before taking photos.

Packing list and gate tips

Travellers on a Maasai Mara game drive with an Adventure Jeeps driver-guide
Pack light, layer up

What to pack

  • A warm layer for 06:00 drives; mornings in the Mara are cold.
  • Neutral-coloured clothes, a hat and sunscreen.
  • Binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens.
  • A soft bag, max 15 kg, if you are flying in.
  • Offline maps, downloaded before Narok; signal fades in the reserve.

At the gate and in the park

  1. Carry a backup payment. Tickets are cashless through the official system, but bring some clean USD 20 and 50 notes, and small Kenyan shillings for toilets and snacks.
  2. Exit on time. Gates close at 18:00, and leaving late can mean a fine of around USD 500 per vehicle (Sekenani Gate guide).
  3. Stay in the vehicle. Only get out at marked spots or when your guide says it is safe.
  4. Keep your distance and keep quiet. Never feed or call to the animals.
  5. Trust your guide's timing. The 06:00 start feels early, but it is when the predators are most active.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month for a Maasai Mara safari?

August is the peak of the Great Migration and river crossings. January to March offers dry weather, fewer visitors and half-price reserve fees.
